Southampton Cenotaph

 

Cenotaph means ‘empty tomb’. In the south of Southampton, you will find the Southampton Cenotaph memorial for the First World War. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, this is the first to be of amazing and influential design.

It is a tall pyramidal-shaped memorial having a monument or a tomb to honor the soldiers who lost their lives in the war. The multiple sculptural details like the prominent cross and a special stone of remembrance are another interesting thing to notice here.

It was first made as an addition to the Peace Day celebrations in 1919. It originally held caskets of memories for the First World War soldiers but today it commemorates all soldiers who lost their lives after the First World War.

You will find the names of the soldiers who lost their lives, carved on all three sides. The overall design uses abstracts of soldiers enumerating generally all soldiers.

Southampton Common
